“No one has ever taught me a single thing about poker. I’ve never read a book, not a single page…”
Nothing too spectacular about this you say as there are many losing players that never ever read a book on poker and simply play because they enjoy the game or the gamble. But when Patrik Antonius is saying this, we sit back and take note.
It is amazing that Patrik has never read a poker book, I do not think players should take this as the way to go as books are certainly useful. Books give you the standard way to play, taking on all comers whilst actually learning the game is a big risk to your bankroll.
What it does show us is Patriks amazing learning and adaptive skills when it comes to poker. He managed to pick up, assess and develop the skills he watched from other players all the way to the highest stakes games. The amazing thing is he has developed strategies that match what the professional players have taught us in many books. Ultimately he takes a large advantage from this clarity of thought.
Patrik now wins and loses millions, he not only has the stomach for the huge swings but also the ability to constantly be learning.
Tom “Durrr” Dwan has bet 3/1 with $500,000 that Antonius would not be able to adapt to the four tabling element of play against him over 50,000 hands in the Durrr challenge. Perhaps if he thought a little about how Patrik has developed throughout his career by being a totally self taught professional he would have thought twice about this bet. But that’s ego for you.
