Cake Poker Challenge

by Mal on April 6, 2009

I have been drilling down on exactly what and for how much I intend my poker challenge to be. There are a few changes from the last post, which comes from my partnership with cake poker who I think is going to become a major force on the online poker scene very soon.

My online username for Cake Poker will be Demuur. So keep an eye out for me at the tables! Read on for more details of the challenge.

For years I have watched poker on T.V. yet a few financial problems that needed sorting kept me from playing poker with a decent bankroll. I never played cash games as I did not feel I had any edge at all and I would need some “learning money” to stick in and potentially lose before I started learning how to play the game properly. (Cash games that is). I find it hard to sit and sit playing poker, but Cake is especially attractive to me because there is no tracking software allowed, which makes pros perhaps more reluctant to play there.

I must give myself a reason to play there and my reason is two fold that I have come up with.

I want to create a systematic approach that anyone can replicate that helps them stay in the game from a bankroll standpoint. I am not a gambler, which gives me an edge over the reckless player. I should be able to – by staying in the game and following a set pattern of play – eliminate the random attempts at different levels most players do and allow my edge which comes from studying hard and practising come through.

The second reason is that I tend to avoid actually sitting down and playing my hands as I’m an edgy character who struggles to sit still long enough! I would rather watch a pokertube video than actually play, from either a fear of losing money or not being good enough. I am a bit lazy and rarely totally up for it! Forcing myself to play is a good thing and something I am looking forward to.

The rules of my challenge will be as follows…

  • Deposit some dollars at Cake Poker. Take advantage of signing up for rakeback and their generous deposit bonus.
  • Play one table to start with then move on to 2-4 tables as I get confident.
  • No time limit for each session, but I will hopefully play plenty of hands as this is necessary.
  • Using a hand replayer I will try and keep a steady amount of youtube videos coming through for blog purposes.
  • There will be no cash out rules, but I will move tables regularly as I will be playing fairly straight forward with little bluffing – ABC as they say.

I hope to do more on youtube both to gain viewers and also to keep myself checking back through hand histories which is essential if you are to learn from your mistakes, you first must identify them.

I believe that I can show a good profit each month. I want to prove that winning is possible for me as I continually read that “low stakes you can easily win” yet see relatively few people going for it and posting some decent wins. I will not be updating every single day, website updates can be expected around twice to three times a week.

Wish me luck and stay tuned.
