I Finally Played Some Hands
Posted by Mal | September 30, 2009 | Posted in: Mals Blog | Comments (0)It amazes me that once I manage to get through the opening stages of a tournament I seem to do quite well. I enjoy any victory, even one like this in a $0.10 360 Turbo SNG! It reminds me that even I can have small victories and gives me hope to carry on learning and trying to get better.
I’ve now managed to turn $0.00 into $8.70 so my bankroll challenge of trying to turn nothing into something is making extremely slow, but steady progress. I decided to think about why I refuse to deposit even though I can.
Myself and Gary tried to record a podcast yesterday but unfortunately after two crashes of my computer we had to abandon those plans. I know why it happened after researching the error, it was the drivers of the microphone. Now it has never happened before, but that’s the weird thing about computers in that they do seem to get ill sometimes. That error might never appear again, but I am getting a new computer soon so hopefully all will be well.
Back to poker. We were discussing in that podcast about trying to learn to not be scared about the money involved. Gary said that he forces himself to think in chips rather than dollars, I know how hard this can be. By building a bankroll from scratch I am hoping to build my tolerance of playing and not have to deposit. Besides, if you win money from nothing and use it solely for poker it cannot be judged as you pissing your money up the wall, which I would not want to do anyway.
My tournament win was good because it is only the third time I have won a tournament online but like I’ve said before, I rarely play. I am hard at work with my sports writing and write around 2000 words a day each weekday. It is hard work but I enjoy it. I am hoping to play poker semi professionally one day, I hope to have both a job and use that as a second income to improve my quality of life. I see no reason why I cannot achieve this as I have written probably 100,000 words on the game and done tons of hours of research.
Gary gave a fantastic tip on playing early tournament play. He said to fold AJ in early position for the first three levels. I will definately do that from now on. I found myself in so many tricky spots it seemed that no matter what happened in the hand it became a problem, unless I hit the hand hard. So better to muck it I think. Excellent tip, take note people!
It’s a pity the show was a fail, because it was good. We are going to have another go shortly and get it out there.
Keep playing and enjoy yourself on the tables until next time.
