I made a concerted effort to do better today. I had my normal breakfast, worked hard at work and got plenty done before settling down to my lunch which I had prepared before work. I was surprised by my lunch reading of 7.0. I think I need to get up earlier to ensure I have breakfast by 7.30am.

Tea came and went and I calculated my sugar fairly well. I was a tiny bit naughty and had a Hot Dog after our final football friendly but felt happy with 8.6 before bed and I had 34 units of glargine.

I got up this morning and had 2 slices of wholemeal toast. Normally I’d have weetabix but as I had a three hour journey ahead of me I wanted to test my stomach. My sugar reading at lunch was 7.2 which was a little high so I adjusted (or so I thought) to 10.

Setting off for home at 1.10pm I arrived back at 4.10pm. I ate the piece of chicken my sister had cooked for me.

I will return tomorrow to full discipline. My weight is down again but I could have achieved more. It’s about maintaining focus because it’s working.

I set off to Nottingham at 6am. My stomach was weird (work it out) but I decided to go for it. Unfortunately after stopping for a comfort break at Scotch Corner Services, Ferrybridge, in the hard shoulder where I wretched and was nearly sick, then again outside Nottingham in a lay-by where I was sick, I was almost doubled over with pain. I was sick (and I mean, SICK) twice once I arrived. It was the worst journey ever.

Lunch came and I was ok levels-wise so I didn’t eat. I had gone up to 9.4 for some reason by 4pm. I checked as I was about to drive over the Lincoln. I didn’t eat but took 3 units to hopefully get to 7.0 – 8.0 by bedtime for my glargine. I got to Lincoln by 6pm. I was 7.8 before bed and took 30 units of glargine.

This will be a longer post than usual!

When I look back and think that, in the past, every time I snacked I was making a mistake I just wish I’d tested and it would have helped me say no. Today was a learning curve about how important it is to remain prepared and stick to the plan. Unfortunately today was also a lesson in how other people can cause the plan to be thrown up in the air.

Breakfast saw my 9.1 adjustment from yesterday go well and I was happy with my first reading of 5.8. I opened my cupboard and found no weetabix. Breakfast was screwed. I’d slept in (another error as I need to eat by 7.30am) so at 8.30am I made do with a bacon sandwich as it’s important to eat. I had remembered to defrost a chicken yesterday knowing I had Football today at 12.45pm so had plenty of time to make a tortilla wrap with chicken to see me through the afternoon. That is what made 8.30am breakfast an error. In order to ensure no insulin is in my system I need 4 hours. I decided to wait until 12pm before starting to make my lunch but I still had plenty of time to get it right.

Or so I thought. One of the club Managers had gone out last night and got blind drunk. When I telephoned and asked if he had washed the kits as he had been asked to do he admitted he hadn’t. I had to leave the house at 11am to take him to find his car then I came home and threw what needed to be washed into my washing machine and then made myself the chicken breast. Sensing I may be late home due to the inevitable team meetings that would come about after this faux pas by the other Manager, I had two sandwiches and headed out. Not my ideal lunch but that was how things panned out.

At tea I had a reading of 8.5. This was down to changing what I eat and not knowing the correct amount of insulin to take. 8.5 is towards the top of what is acceptable and I’d rather be 6.0 or lower. I took it on the chin and adjusted, taking 10 and noting the fact it was 8pm I did not have my full dinner. I had peas, mash and mince. It was really nice.

11pm comes and I expected to be high, knowing I had another 90 minutes of insulin left in me. I felt fine, but was amazed to be 3.6 and in hypo. I was forced to eat two rolls and then waited before testing again at 11.30pm. This time I was 5.3 and knowing my sugar would continue to rise I had 24 units of glargine and came up here to write this blog and head to bed. I have lots to do tomorrow and am up early. I will report on how I juggle my insulin but I must and will do better although today was (partly) outside of my control.

However, I also note and admit that as a diabetic the error was allowing the control to slip in the first place and I made a number of errors throughout the day. It’s always in my control and I must put myself first.

Let me break down things for you. Breakfast to lunch is sorted, I only need to adjust from 4 units to 5 units.

Lunch to tea is alright providing I don’t purchase anything at the shops that I shouldn’t. I bought a crusty brown baguette from Morrison’s and this has contributed to higher readings. I need to step up my intensity because things have felt harder. After tea I’m fine and don’t struggle at all with not eating before bed.

So my errors at the moment are around tea which was always my ‘struggle zone’ and it’s proving that way again. The 4-times-a-day testing regime keeps me honest and I really struggle to admit when I’ve made an error which also helps my discipline, but even keeping this blog is proving to be difficult and tiresome right now.

This is a test and I will come through it. My 60-day itch so to speak! What I need is another boost via decent weight loss to get me back in the groove.

Today I started well with a light breakfast and lunch. I really struggled throughout the morning and was hungry. I had a packet of crisps as I didn’t have a banana but if you’ve dieted before trust me when I say a little of what you like is dangerous. It resulted in me going to Morrison’s and buying my food but then getting a small brown baguette and eating half of that. I paid the price with a 10.1 reading. That’s the life lesson from today.

I successfully adjusted and got back to 6.2 by night. A bit low but a further adjustment will see me right in the morning. I’ve found the afternoons hard as I want something I like. I think it’s because the weight loss has slowed and it feels like it’s stopped. It hasn’t, but it will if I don’t get myself in gear.

Re-focus tomorrow. Without fail.

I met some friends this morning and had planned for some time that today I would eat slightly differently at breakfast and lunch today. I am aware this has been quite regular recently and do not want to reach a point where I either panic if I deviate from my normal routine but I also need not to allow little errors to creep in where I slip back towards old habits even by a small margin.

After breakfast we returned to my house where I then helped a friend with their dissertation research before driving them to County Hall for a tour. We had lunch and then I lost my testing kit which meant 20 minutes going back and forth between the council chamber and the canteen with increasing panic and frustration before discovering I had left it outside the chamber on a table where it was almost immediately picked up and handed into the front desk as a lost item. Drama over I came home and had my tea. Tomorrow I need to shop as I’m out of potatoes, milk, veg, eggs, weetabix and most other things I eat.

Because lunch was not my normal food my readings were out and I miscalculated the carbs a bit today. I adjusted before bed and will be ready for a good day tomorrow.

I was naughty today. I went to the Football and I always have a Hot Dog or Burger whenever I go. It’s bad and I shouldn’t do it but it’s a long-standing habit. I admit I had one tonight. I should have paid the price but my reading was 6.4 before bed so I adjusted to 28 glargines because I imagine my sugar would continue to go up because of the bread so I may be higher than I’d like in the morning as a result.

I need to increase my exercise dramatically. My weight loss has slowed and I fear it’s because I’ve gradually increased the calories and whilst I’m still coming in at under 2000 per day I am keen to maintain discipline and do better. I don’t want to slip.

Tomorrow I am meeting friends for breakfast but will make a healthy choice and I will exercise in the afternoon and also do some weights.

Today was a very strange day in many ways which are irrelevant to this health blog but thankfully the readings were stable.

At breakfast I checked in at 5.3 and took four units and checked in at lunch at 5.1. I had taken my Mother for a game of carpet bowls which was something a little different but it also meant about 2500 – 3500 steps of low-impact walking up and down the rink. We played for one hour.

I had a nice lunch, taking 7 units of insulin and then at tea I defrosted a streak which was really nice. Coming in at 7.1 felt good and I had 30 units of glargine before going to bed.

I go to my parents for lunch on Sundays where my lunch is always a little bigger but I save my bread for the evening. So whilst tea may look like a treat it’s the same food but in a different order. I may do this during the week as I tend to find lunch alright without bread now that I am used to eating less at that time.

I expected my morning reading to be lower than 6.4 after taking 28 units of glargine last night. But 6.4 is fine as I can readjust easily.

The adjustment was successful getting down to 4.5 at lunch. I took 2 units and was 6.3 by tea. I will take 3 units from now on. I had 7 units with my tea as I had kept my bread until the evening and I had a banana. You may have noticed that I’ve almost cut bananas out of my diet. They have 30g of carbs in the larger ones and that is carbs I can do without.

My night reading of 7.9 was ok and I adjusted to 32 units to get back to hopefully a standing start of 5.0 – 6.0 in the morning.

I made a pact with myself to be really focused today. I managed to do better having my normal breakfast and a decent lunch, no snacks until tea then my tea with no subsequent snacks afterwards.

The only error I made was allowing myself a little brown sauce and not factoring that in or checking the sugar content. That hiked me to 7.0 but I got it back. I attended Football this afternoon and didn’t snack. I then went to a quiz in the evening and didn’t have food.

Today was going fine until after lunch then things went a bit crazy! I agreed to meet someone after work to put the goalposts in for the Football team I manage and then one of the Managers had problems so we went to the pub and relaxed and discussed it.

I had had a “lighter breakfast” (a new offering) at Morrison’s with a good friend of mine. It was a rare treat, but this meant I probably (definitely) over-ate today. Because I used to always get a “little breakfast” it caused a bit of havoc when I ordered something different. We had the checkout attendant in absolute knots lol. Anyway, that just shows how naughty I was. I’m a saint by comparison now although today was a bit of a blip. Bizarrely you will note my sugar levels weren’t too bad. Admittedly my evening 10.7 reading sucked but I will have a tremendous food day tomorrow and do some exercise too.

Today was a better day for Food. It’s no coincidence I was really busy and that’s a great way of moving your attention away from food. The levels were fine today. I cooked a topside joint and that was a first for me! It came out well and I ate a few slices of beef.

There is not much else to say on today! Solid readings and same again tomorrow.

Today was not a fantastic food day but well within my calorie goal. My usual breakfast at 5.6 (I will try taking 6 units tomorrow) saw me come in at 7.0 around lunchtime and I am at a loss to explain that one. At tea my adjustment worked.

Because I had a Football match (we won 4-1!)  and had to leave the house at 5.10pm I could not make my usual roast. I had a packet of crisps at the bar afterwards and good job I did as I came in low at 5.9. I thought 5 units at tea was more than enough to get back to my 7.0 range. From 5.9 I adjusted to 26 units of glargine before bed.

I ate better today but it does seem to have got harder in the last few days. My readings have increased a little bit into the 6.0 – 7.0 so I’m going to work hard to get them back into the 5.0 – 6.0 range. I was just in range at 9.5 before bed so adjusted to 34 units of glargine. Sometimes the readings are not completely predictable and it’s important to stay in range rather than stressing about specific numbers.

A solid, if unspectacular day. Tomorrow will be maximum effort because whilst I have no made what I would class as “mistakes” I have lost a bit of intensity and need it back if I am to achieve my goals.

Over the summer I shall be putting together plans for a new gym space in the garage.
