The main consideration today was trying to make progress in the evening reading. The rest seem well within the correct ranges. So I’ll skip straight to that.

I was starving before tea so had a banana, partly because I was hungry and partly because they are nearly going off as I’ve canned them from breakfast. My tea reading therefore headed north to 7.7. This could be classed as a day of generous eating, but actually I hardly get over 1500 calories now. Here’s a graphic from MyFitnessPal on what I ate today.

As I post this I noticed the carb readings for each meal are 33 for breakfast (and I was told to take 1 unit per 10gs carbs) I calculate 3 for breakfast. Bang on. For lunch, 44 and I took 3. Tea I took 6 before adjustment (see below) and the carbs are (ignoring the banana as that was earlier) 67g which should be 6. ūüėÄ

Looking through my tea readings I had noticed I had been coming in high for about a week so action was required. From 7.7 I estimated that my usual 4 units was not high enough so adjusted to 6. Given that I would normally be looking to gain 2.0mmol (from around 5.0 to 7.0 usually to arrive at my target of 7.0 before bed), my standard tea insulin should be net +2.0. If this happened from 7.7 I would (if I calculated right) come in at around 10.

So after working out the right amount for the meal I needed to then adjust for a second time to tackle the +2.0 and down to 7.0 from a potential 10 reading. Therefore I added another 3 units on top of the 6 units to achieve that. Confused yet?

After taking 9 units of insulin I checked at 11pm and came in at 5.8. This was a little low so I took only 28 units of glargine.

Standard day until the evening but do not disregard that I am still on the diet after almost a month! I had thrown out the final potato and gone back to my Morrison’s potato. I allowed myself an extra bread roll for a treat and adjusted to 6 units of insulin to compensate. I fell asleep at 10.30pm on my bed and woke up cursing at 1.30am! Interestingly I was 8.3 which almost proves that the carb-laden beast potatoes I had been eating were no good for me. This is another good piece of learning. 30 units of glargine taken and a quick post and off to bed.

It was a good day for me as I also found out I had a tax rebate coming in a couple of weeks. Tomorrow it will be exercise in the morning and a bit of free weights. I am thinking of turning my garage into a little gym.

At breakfast I took at extra unit of insulin, 4 in total, coming in at lunch at 4.8. I had planned to eat Tortilla wrap, chicken breast and a banana for lunch but I forgot to defrost a chicken overnight so made do with something I could prepare before work and had scrambled eggs with a wholemeal roll. This was 605 calories so far, so I was able to enjoy a full roast in the evening.

Between lunch and tea I checked my readings at 3.30pm and found my sugar to be 7.5. My tea reading was 5.8 so I took what I thought was enough for my tea. As I’d only had about 1100 calories so far I allowed myself a treat of an extra wholemeal bread roll. I clocked in at 10.50pm at a high 10.1, despite upping my insulin to 8 units. Very frustrating.

I am confused on why I am taking the same insulin with the same meal and coming in higher than I was a few weeks ago by some distance. The only thing I have changed is the potato which I am not even bothering to eat the last one, it’s going in the bin and I’ll be buying my normal ones. Maybe the potato and the batch of Morrison’s brown wholemeal rolls are different in some way. I’m eating the same milk, the same food and almost the same meals. I just don’t get it! I will get it right tomorrow hopefully.

Breakfast to lunch readings were fine. I eat the same breakfast every day so it’s fairly easy to get that bit right.

I should have taken 4 units at lunch but 6.7 is ok to come in at tea, however, I’d prefer to be nearer to 5.0. The key thing is I’ve reduced far enough to not hypo at 3pm anymore which I was doing in early June.

At tea things took a turn. This may sound crazy but I THINK I took 5 units of insulin at tea. I wrote down on my card 5 units but don’t remember actually injecting it. From now on I’m going to inject THEN note down what I have TAKEN rather than what I will take once tea is ready and not before. That removes the chance of forgetting to take the insulin itself.

I tested late at midnight or just after and I was very frustrated coming in at 10.2. I adjusted with 36 glargine but I let myself down not testing at 11pm. It’s very frustrating as if you read my food diary above you will see I am still very disciplined on what I am eating and what I am avoiding. Today the work coffee morning had bacon sandwiches and I did not have any. My mate got a donner kebab and ate it at my house and I didn’t have any. I’m not making food mistakes!

If I did take my tea insulin the only change which the nurse did warn me about was any small change like changing the potatoes I eat (which I have as I went elsewhere to buy them this time as Morrison’s had ran out) and different carbs can react in different ways. It’s that precise!

I’m going back to the Morrison’s veg and will make an effort to keep things as they were. I’m planning to slowly cut the bread roll out of my tea and crank up the exercise. That is next months target but it starts immediately.

The overnight adjustment worked well from yesterday. I opened at 5.8 and had 3 units. At lunch I was 6.0, which I think is ok but i will take 4 units tomorrow and see if that brings me in at the correct level at lunch. I was pleased with my lunch reading to tea reading.

At tea I was 5.7 and adjusted to 5 units as yesterday I had come in high. I came in a little high once again at 8.3. I took 30 glargine units, possibly 32 was the right level, however, I will simply go from 3 to 4 if I need a quick adjustment in the morning. An explanation may be that I bought some new baking potatoes that are a better sized for 1 per meal but I think may contain more carbs or slightly different carbs. I will be returning to my old type once they are used up.

My calorie intake remains at about 1200 – 1400 a day, meaning I need exercise to prevent my body storing fat and keep it burning. That’s on the menu for tomorrow.

Things are becoming routine and I know this because it’s becoming harder to write things. I am sitting comfortably between 5.0 and 6.0 all day. The 8.9 reading was a bit random although I did take the reading after midnight as a friend was over. This may explain the why it was up as the liver was happily chunking out sugar as it does every night in all of us. Whatever the reason for it I adjusted glargine anyway.

I am going to spend some time checking out my historical evening readings from tea (I eat almost the same meal each night) to before bed to ensure I get it right, but I think from the mid 5’s I should be taking 5 units with tea to arrive at 11.30pm at about 7.0.

My current focus is on losing weight and this week I am beginning to incorporate lifting some free weights into my daily routine as well as doing some cardio on my exercise bike. I am aiming to do 20 minutes cycling per day (two sets of 10 minutes) to begin with and then I will increase to two sets of 15 minutes. This will affect my sugar readings and require less insulin than I currently inject.

I felt really down and flat today but not because of food. That went well. I started with 5.0 at breakfast which meant yesterday’s adjustment was spot on. I was 5.4 and both lunch and tea and I had followed the nurse’s recommendation to adjust from 4 units to 2 when I don’t eat bread which worked perfectly.

Every Sunday tea I treat myself to a nice sandwich as a treat which in comparison to meals gone by would have been a “good” meal which now is classed as a treat. That shows how far I’ve came in such a short time. I was 8.2 at 11.00pm and adjusted glargine accordingly.

I also did 20 minutes on the exercise and will do that again tomorrow. I need to keep that weight falling off. Losing 5lbs every two weeks is a nice feeling which I’d like to experience again next time.

Nothing major to report until the tea reading. I ate my normal lunch and then had the normal insulin amount for that lunch. For some reason I came in at 8.1! I cannot explain it as I was even delayed having my tea until 7pm so in theory I was risking a hypo but I remained just over 8.

I took it on the chin, adjusted with 6 units and came in at a satisfactory 7.2 before bed where I took 28 units of glargine. It’s amazing how different I felt seeing the night reading than I did at the tea reading. Because the number had been higher I was nervous as the reader counted down from 4 to 1 at night before giving me the result but I was pleased to almost hit my 7.0 target bang on.

Today was a busy day as I had my diabetic check first thing this morning. The good news is I have lost 5lbs and my BP was back to normal.

Straight after my appointment I headed to Crook for a meeting at 10.30am. I left the meeting at 12.30pm because I expected to be a little low. Oddly, I had gone up and was 6.8. I cannot explain that reading as I only had Weetabix for breakfast.

At tea I was 5.8 and adjusted to 3 units of insulin to hopefully check in at 11pm at my target of 7.0. I tested at 22.52pm and was 9.1. The correct adjustment was probably about 5 units, but hindsight is always 20/20.

It’s frustrating as I ate sensibly and healthily today and used the units consistent with what has provided good readings in the past. I took 36 units of glargine as when I was 10.7 on two occasions I tested at 5.9 the next day so 36 from 9.1 should see me land around there too.

My targets over the next two weeks is to lose another 5 pounds and introduce exercise.¬† This will mean further adjustments and should see me hit my targets or come fairly close to them. However, as long as I’m heading in the right direction in terms of my weight that is fine.

I went to bed at 6.6 on Wednesday night and awoke at 6.0 at 7.45am. This means that at 28 units of glargine I wake up more or less within 0.5 of my bedtime reading and 30 units of glargine sees me come in 1.0 – 2.0 lower. I was 6.6 at tea so took 4 units which I hoped kept my reading as it was. As ever these things range a bit. My night reading was 7.6 so I had 28 units to see what that brings.

I found myself really hungry at 10pm which is quite rare for me. I’d watched a few food prep YouTube videos, but I suppose it was the healthy one of Chicken, rice and broccoli that I wanted, so on the plus side healthy cravings must be a good thing!

I’ve collated my night to morning glargine readings to show look at getting my overnight insulin levels and readings tightened up.¬†The dates which are missed out are where for whatever reason, either a morning or evening sugar reading was missed, meaning there is missing information. The reasons for these missing readings included forgetting once, dropping my reader down the stairs on another and falling asleep at 9pm and waking up at 3am on another day.

This shows that taking 32 units of glargine can reduce my levels by anything up to 3.7 although this was from a starting point of 8.1. Normally the drop is less. The safer zone seems to be 28 which brings me in at just about what I was the night before. I think 30 might be the sweet spot for me, but this will need further testing.

On the rare occasion I am high (I define this as more than 8.5) 36 – 38 units gets me back to normal with a larger overnight drop. This confirms the 28 – 32 range is where I will obtain a similar reading or minimal drop.

I have a friend visiting and we are doing a lot of photography. We even signed up our first wedding photography customer for summer 2019! I ate healthily all day with no snacks or protein bars (not that this would have been particularly bad) and my readings were excellent and controlled all day.

We could have easily ate rubbish, we normally would have done, but we kept it right and I must be honest I didn’t feel hungry.¬†At night, given that yesterday my sugar levels went from 7.5 before bed to 4.8 in the morning having taken 32 units of glargine I adjusted to 28 units when starting from 6.6 tonight. I expect to come in at around 5.0 tomorrow to get off to another good start.

My reading this morning was exactly where I thought it would be. I had no bananas left so I had a smaller breakfast. I might save on the 135 calories and the 30g of carbs in a large banana by not eating one at breakfast. I didn’t feel any hungrier prior to lunch so it made no difference.

At lunchtime my reading was 5.1. I had speculated my reading might jump up as taking 2 units hardly moves the dial at all and feels like nothing goes in, but it was fine. I did not eat a banana so I had 1.5 tortilla wraps with a beautiful cooked chicken.

After returning home from work I cut my lawn and had a protein bar at 3pm. I prepared my veg and peeled my potato for tea, having put my chicken breast out to defrost this morning.

At tea my reading was 5.1 and I had 2 wholemeal brown rolls and gravy which was a bit of an indulgence. I should have taken 6 units of insulin and will note that for future reference but 8.1 is not the worst reading. I was probably 1 unit out of the optimal level. I adjusted glargine to 32 units which will get me back to a good starting point tomorrow morning.

The readings today were very good. I felt in control and my calculations were good. Taking 32 glargine last night from 6.8 brought me down to 4.5 so I planned to reduce tonights glargine to 30 providing I was above 6.8. I was 7.5 so took 30 glargine and anticipate tomorrow’s reading will be between 5.0 and 6.0.

I had a few hunger pangs but nothing major. The only indulgence was a protein bar during the England World Cup match, but the macros are good (high protein, low carbs and very low sugar).

Breakfast levels were a little low but I adjusted and took less insulin to ensure lunch reading was in the correct range. Lunch provided a nice range and I had 6 units of insulin to combat my mashed potato. I always have gravy on a Sunday which is my little indulgence. I weighed myself and have lost 2 pounds. It’s not a lot but it’s nice to get on the scales being honest with myself and knowing where I am. I will try and shed another one or two before Friday by continuing to eat well and continuing to exercise. I know it will come down as my diet is solid and healthy now. I look a lot better and not as tired.

Tea saw me hypo although again I felt no ill-effects. I adjusted the insulin to hopefully come in at 6.0 – 7.0 before tea. That worked well and I came in at 6.8 so had my usual 32 glargine and went to bed.

The weird readings today started at lunch. I was 5.7 at breakfast and had the same breakfast and the same amount of insulin as normal and can generally set my clock by a similar reading 4 hours later. The only difference in what I did today was that I had breakfast at 7.30am rather than 8am.

I was surprised and alarmed to come in before lunch at a hypo-level 3.3, so I had my lunch and tested again. I was still 3.3. I ate some chocolate and tested once more about 15 minutes after and this time I was 4.9. I took my planned 4 units of insulin hoping the chocolate had acted as a reset and the lunch would be back to normal. I felt absolutely no ill-effects from being 3.3. Not a flicker. That was also weird as I’ve been shaky at 4.1 before.

Whenever I get a setback like this I focus on what I can learn from it. The following is taken from the website medbroadcast.com/drug/getdrug/novorapid;

“Insulin aspart is a rapid-acting insulin. It takes¬†10 to 20 minutes¬†to begin working after the injection, has its maximum effect between 1 hour and 3 hours, and stops working after 3 to 5 hours.”

I usually have lunch 4 hours after breakfast, so it is possible (probable) that there is a¬† further 1 hour of effect to be had from my breakfast insulin. I will need to adjust for this if I eat after 7am and also bear the breakfast insulin might still be killing carbs when doing my lunch calculations. This explains why I calculate my lunch insulin and often go low anyway. I probably did nothing wrong I just didn’t remember that breakfast insulin lasts longer than morning. This is a key piece of learning.

Tea came and my reading was 11.1 which is high. Obviously the 4 units I took at lunch was nowhere near enough to deal with the chocolate I took to deal with the hypo and then my normal lunch, which contained carbs. I’ll admit I had absolutely no idea what insulin to take at lunch and will ask the nurse about this when I see her next week.

The good news is I calculated carefully at tea and probably 1 unit away from the optimal amount and got things back on track quickly. I’m confident I know have the skills to make adjustments and stabilise. Whilst I took 14 units keen to get the levels back to where they should be, 13 units would’ve seen me come in at 7.2 roughly which would have been correct. I took 32 glargine and should wake up at about 6.0.
